Seppo Guide

3D game instructions

Seppo games can now be played in exciting 3D environments. These new game boards are created with the Unity game engine, introducing more gamification elements, bringing the game story to life and making learning games more immersive than ever before.

Creating a 3D Seppo game

Implementing a 3D game board to your own game is easy. Seppo offers multiple game templates through a game package. Access to a 3D game template package can be purchased with an additional license fee. Here’s how you can create a game using a 3D template:

  1. Login to your Seppo account
  2. Navigate to Game Packages library on your Dashboard
  3. Download a 3D game template from the package
  4. The template is now in your Dashboard games and you can start editing it

Creating a game on a 3D game board is a bit different from the normal Seppo game creation. The game editor showcases a 2D overhead view of the 3D environment. In this 2D image, specific task placement areas are shown as white circles around the map. When a game instructor adds a Seppo task to the game, the task pin is shown with a gray color, implying that it’s currently inactive. The task pin needs to be dragged with the mouse to one of the placement area circles for the task to become active.

The 3D game boards have a varying amount of task placement areas based on the size of the 3D game board. The game instructor can decide how many and which of these task spots they want to use. All of them do not have to be used. However, some of the task spots open new areas in the game board. For example, a task placed on a door will open up a whole new room for the player to explore. If the door spot doesn’t have a task in it but the room does, the door is automatically open from the start of the game. If neither the door or the room have no tasks in them, the door stays closed.

The game templates have different themes and gamification elements implemented into the games. For example, the 24News game board takes place in a news broadcast studio. The player completes various tasks in a studio environment. A special feature of this game is that the player can upload their media answers into the game, making the news studio become filled with their media. Another game board, the Medieval Town, showcases a town that has fallen into disrepair. As the player completes tasks, the town environment changes for the better with animations, thus creating a rewarding experience throughout the game.

After the game creation is complete, the game can be started. Players can login to the game with the game’s pin code through Seppo’s login page. The player will see a Unity loading screen before the game starts.

Playing a 3D Seppo game

When a player logs in to a 3D game, the Seppo user interface is shown on top of the 3D game board. The game is to be played on a computer, using a keyboard and mouse. A player can move around the map using WASD keys. Holding down the Shift key allows the player to move faster.

The Escape key opens Pause/Help view, pausing the game. In this view, the player can change the mouse sensitivity setting and invert horizontal and vertical axes. During the game, the player’s mouse controls the camera angle. The Pause/Help menu releases the mouse from the camera control, allowing the player to access Seppo’s top bar and settings. Thus, if the player wishes to check out the game’s scoreboard during the game, it needs to be done by first pressing the Escape key to pause the game.

Opening a task also releases the mouse so that the player can input an answer to the task. A player can open a task by simply walking to the task pin. When the player is close enough, an overlay appears below the task pin, encouraging the player to open the task by pressing left click on the mouse.

With these controls, the player can navigate throughout the game board and complete the tasks assigned to it. After completing the game, a special ending screen appears. The ending screen displays a cinematic reel of camera angles showcasing the completed game map. During this, the player can log out of the game, or continue exploring the game board by pressing the Continue button.
